The May 2027 prescribed titles are out. The IB released them to schools at the start of September 2026 through the Programme Resource Centre, which gives you about six months before the 15 March 2027 upload deadline and rather less before your school's own. Six titles. You pick one, you write up to 1,600 words on it, and you cannot change a word of the wording.
This article does the work most students skip. For each of the six titles you get the operative words that decide the argument, the areas of knowledge the title fixes for you, the premise built into the question, and the trap that pulls capable essays into the middle band. It is analysis, not a set of summaries.

What Are the May 2027 TOK Prescribed Titles?
Here are the six titles released by the IB for the May 2027 examination session.
Title 1: Do we gain a better appreciation of the human experience from the artist or the historian? Discuss with reference to the arts and history.
Title 2: If values change over time, how can they, nevertheless, continue to guide the pursuit of knowledge? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
Title 3: In the production of knowledge, how can knowledge be reliable if it is built on assumptions? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and one other area of knowledge.
Title 4: To what extent do you agree with the claim that “any coincidence is worth noticing; you can throw it away later if it is only a coincidence” (Agatha Christie). Answer with reference to mathematics and one other area of knowledge.
Title 5: In the production of knowledge, when choosing one explanation over another, to what extent should simplicity be prioritized? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
Title 6: In the pursuit of knowledge, what value is there in exploring the paradoxical or the counterintuitive? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.

Analysis
First Impressions: What Makes This Set Distinctive
Start with the shape of the set. One title quotes a novelist. Title 4 asks how far you agree with a line adapted from Agatha Christie, that "any coincidence is worth noticing; you can throw it away later if it is only a coincidence." It is the only title that hands you someone else's claim to accept or reject, and the only one that says answer rather than discuss. Answer the IB's wording, not Christie's, and copy it exactly as your school gives it.
Three titles ask how or what value rather than whether. Title 2 concedes that values change and asks how they nevertheless keep guiding inquiry. Title 3 concedes that knowledge is built on assumptions and asks how it can still be reliable. Title 6 assumes exploring the paradoxical is worth something and asks what. In each case the yes-or-no essay is already written for you, and it will not get you far. Supply the mechanism first, then show where the mechanism breaks.
The areas of knowledge are unusually constrained this session. Title 1 fixes both: the arts and history, with nowhere to hide if every arts example you have is a novel. Titles 3, 4 and 6 each fix one, the human sciences, mathematics and the natural sciences, and let you choose the partner. Only Titles 2 and 5 leave both open. Before you fall in love with a question, check that you can carry half an essay on its required area.
Two currents run through the set. Titles 2, 3 and 5 all ask what makes knowledge trustworthy: values that move, assumptions that are false, the pull of the simpler explanation. Titles 1 and 6 ask what knowledge is worth, whether that is appreciation of the human experience or the value of chasing a contradiction. Mathematicians and physicists have a natural home in 4 and 6. Economics and psychology students should look hard at 3. Take 1 only if you can write about painting or music as convincingly as about a novel.

Title-by-Title Overview
Title 1: Artist or Historian (The Arts + History, both fixed)
This title stages a contest, and the first move of a strong essay is to ask whether the contest is real. "Better" presupposes that the artist and the historian are competing for the same prize. Are they? Aristotle thought poetry more philosophical than history because poetry deals in the universal and history in the particular. A historian would reply that appreciation built on invention is appreciation of nothing in particular.
The operative word is "appreciation". It is not knowledge, and it is not accuracy. It is closer to felt understanding, the sense of what an experience was like from the inside. Once you define it, the question sharpens: can evidence alone deliver that, and can imagination alone be trusted to deliver it truthfully? Both areas of knowledge are fixed here, so there is nowhere to hide. Write about paintings and music as well as novels, or you have covered half the arts.
The trap is the balanced survey that ends with "both matter". Top-band essays reach a judgment. Argue for one, test it against the strongest reply, and say where it fails. The counterclaim that earns credit is the one that challenges the title's premise: historians also select and narrate, artists also research and document, and the line between them is thinner than the title admits. Deciding the contest is misconceived is a judgment, so long as you argue for it.

Title 2: Values That Change but Still Guide (2 AOKs of your choice)
This title looks like a paradox and is actually a test of one assumption: that a guide must stand still to be useful. Magnetic north drifts every year. Navigators still reach their destinations, because they correct for the drift instead of pretending it away. "Nevertheless" is the operative word. It concedes that values change and dares you to explain how guidance survives the change.
The trap is spending 1,600 words proving that values change. The title already grants that. Top-band essays distinguish the values that define good knowledge, such as accuracy and consistency in the sciences, from the values that define acceptable conduct, such as the treatment of research participants, and show that these change at different speeds. That difference is how a changing value can still guide.
Pick your two areas of knowledge for contrast, not comfort. Natural sciences and history make an unusually productive pair: one keeps naming the same virtues in a good theory while changing what counts as meeting them, the other rewrites its questions every generation while still owing every answer to the evidence. Both let you argue that change is not the enemy of guidance.

Title 3: Reliability Built on Assumptions (Human Sciences + 1 AOK)
Almost every economic model assumes something false. Agents are perfectly rational, information is complete, other things stay equal. Economists know this, and the models still price options and design auctions that move real money. That is the puzzle this title hands you. The operative phrase is "how can". You are asked to explain the mechanism first, not to deliver a verdict first, and then to show where that mechanism gives out.
The trap is to treat "reliable" as a synonym for true or certain. It is neither. A reliable method delivers trustworthy results under stated conditions, and the conditions are the assumptions. Seen that way the human sciences stop looking weak: their assumptions are explicit, so they can in principle be tested and revised. Whether they actually get revised is the argument worth having. Your second area should show the concept working differently. In mathematics, denying Euclid's parallel postulate did not produce a mistake. It produced a consistent new geometry.

Title 4: Coincidence Worth Noticing (Mathematics + 1 AOK)
Miss Marple's rule sounds like common sense. Notice everything, decide later. But the title asks to what extent you agree, and the rule hides two costs. Attention is finite, so any coincidence is a promise no knower can keep. And "later" assumes you can drop a pattern once you have named it, while Diaconis and Mosteller show how memory, perception and the sheer number of endpoints keep pushing striking coincidences back in front of you.
Mathematics is the required area, and it sets the strictest standard: proof either turns a coincidence into a theorem or kills it. That is why McKay's observation is such a strong example. A coefficient of the j-function sat one above a dimension of the Monster group, and that hunch became Monstrous Moonshine. But a strict standard is not a guarantee, and your second area will not offer even that.
The trap is writing about coincidence instead of the claim. Probability puzzles and famous lucky discoveries fill pages without touching whether noticing is always worth its cost. Pick a second area where discarding is a judgment rather than a proof, such as history or the natural sciences, and show a coincidence thrown away too early, or never thrown away at all.

Title 5: Simplicity and Explanation (2 AOKs of your choice)
This title puts you at the moment of choice. Two explanations both account for the evidence, and you have to pick one. The operative words are "to what extent" and "prioritized": not whether simplicity matters, but how much, and against what. Accuracy? Scope? The evidence itself? An essay that never names simplicity's rival cannot answer the question it was set.
The trap is treating simplicity as one thing. A theory can be simple because it rests on few principles or because it posits few kinds of entities, and those two can pull apart. Newton wrote a simplicity rule straight into his method: admit no more causes than are true and sufficient. The Copernican case ran on elegance long before it ran on accuracy. Copernicus kept his epicycles, and it took Kepler's ellipses before the tidier picture also fit the sky better.
Then find the case where the simpler explanation lost. A single-cause account of a revolution is simpler than a five-cause one, and usually less accurate. A rule that always prefers the plainest explanation of behavior can quietly become a bias. Top-band essays give simplicity a job, breaking ties between explanations that fit the evidence equally well, and refuse to let it overrule the evidence itself.

Title 6: Paradox and Surprise (Natural Sciences + 1 AOK)
This is the title for students who like puzzles, and that is the trap. The question is not whether paradoxes are fascinating. It is what exploring them is worth to someone in the pursuit of knowledge. In the natural sciences the answer looks obvious: a result that contradicts the reigning theory can be the crack that opens a revolution. But Kuhn's picture of normal science has anomalies explained away wherever possible, and a discipline that chased every surprise would never build anything.
Read the title closely and it names two different things. The paradoxical is a contradiction that sound reasoning drives you into. The counterintuitive is simply a claim that surprises you. Russell's paradox forced mathematicians to rebuild set theory from its axioms. The bacterial cause of peptic ulcers overturned no axiom; it overturned a settled causal story and the treatment built on it. Both produced knowledge, by different routes, and a strong essay does not treat them as one phenomenon.
Then remember that exploration is not free. Every anomaly chased is an experiment not finished and a grant not spent elsewhere. Say who pays, and your essay stops being a celebration of curiosity and starts being an evaluation. Your second area of knowledge is where that verdict gets tested: choose one where the cost of chasing a contradiction looks different from what it costs a physicist, and you will have something to argue.

A 10-Minute Test for Choosing Your Title
Run every title you are considering through these checks. A title that fails two or more of them will fight you for the next several weeks.
- 1Underline every word in the title that could mean two things, then define each one in a single sentence. If you cannot, the essay will drift for 1,600 words.
- 2Name the premise the title assumes and decide whether you accept it. A claim you can only agree with gives you nothing to explore.
- 3Check the areas of knowledge the title fixes. For each required area, write down two real examples from your own courses. If a required area gives you nothing, cross the title off now.
- 4Write your strongest counterclaim in one sentence. If you cannot find one, pick another title. If it beats your claim, switch sides.
- 5Say your answer out loud in fifteen words. If it comes out as "both matter" or "it depends", you have a topic, not a position.
- 6Ask whether the question will still interest you in February. You are going to live with it for months.

Assessment
What the Official Criteria Require
The TOK essay assessment instrument evaluates your essay against one driving question: does the student provide a clear, coherent and critical exploration of the essay title?
At the top band (9–10 marks, Excellent), the criteria reward sustained focus on the title, arguments effectively supported by specific examples, consideration of implications, and genuine evaluation of different points of view. The key word is “evaluation.” Acknowledging a counterclaim is not the same as evaluating it.
At the 7–8 band (Good), the focus and AOK links are effective and arguments are clear, but the evaluation of different perspectives may not be fully developed. Many students aim for this band and fall short because their counterclaims do not genuinely oppose their main argument.

Start Early, Choose Well
September is the whole advantage. The titles reach schools at the start of September 2026, and the IB upload deadline for the May 2027 session is 15 March 2027. Your school will set its own deadline well before that, with drafts and teacher consultations in between. Work back from your school's date rather than the IB's and the real runway is shorter than it looks.
Students who choose in September read differently for the next six months. A physics anomaly, a museum label, an argument in your history class all become material, because you know what you are collecting. Students who choose in January write from memory and hand in a survey. Pick two titles now, draft a paragraph on each, and keep the one that fights back. Then copy your chosen title exactly as your school gives it, because an altered title scores zero.
