When should I start preparing for my TOK essay?

The exhibition is typically completed in Year 1, and the essay in Year 2. However, you should start building your understanding of TOK concepts from day one. When essay titles are released (6 months before submission), you should begin exploring them immediately.

What happens if I write about the wrong prescribed title?

Essays written on the wrong prescribed title automatically receive zero marks. Always verify you're responding to the exact title from your exam session, and never alter or rephrase the question.

How do I choose objects for my TOK exhibition?

Objects can be physical or digital (artifacts, photos, screenshots, articles). Each must have a specific real-world context—no generic stock images. Select objects that genuinely connect to your chosen prompt and allow you to demonstrate TOK thinking through different angles.

What's the difference between TOK and Philosophy?

While they share themes, the IB explicitly states that TOK is not a philosophy course. You don't study specific philosophers or texts. Instead, you explore how knowledge is constructed, justified, and validated across different Areas of Knowledge, using real-world examples and personal reflection.

How many Areas of Knowledge do I need in my essay?
